London, 20 June 2000 – Callahan Associates International LLC (Callahan Associates), the global communications development and operating company, announced today that Andrew Sukawaty will join the company as a Partner. Mr. Sukawaty has been named President and Chief Operating Officer of Callahan Associates, and will work out of the company's London offices.
Mr. Sukawaty comes to Callahan Associates from Sprint PCS where he has been President and Chief Executive Officer since 1996. Mr. Sukawaty has directed a team that made Sprint PCS the fastest growing wireless provider in the United States over the past two years. Mr. Sukawaty directed the business from a privately held partnership valued at just over $US 2 Billion to a publicly traded entity valued at over $US 50 billion which was the best performing large cap in the S&P 500 in 1999. Under his leadership, Sprint PCS has led the US Wireless industry into a phase of explosive growth and into the wireless and Internet convergence. Since he joined the company four years ago, Sprint PCS has grown from a customer base of just a few thousand customers to over seven million and has become the fasted growing wireless provider in the Unites States history.
Before joining Sprint PCS, Mr. Sukawaty was at NTL Limited as Chief Executive Officer of the diversified British broadcast transmission and communications company, a position he held since 1994. Prior to that he was Chief Operating Officer of One2One in the UK, which launched the world's first digital Personal Communications Services (PCS) in 1993. Previously, he held executive positions with AT&T, U S WEST and Northwestern Bell.
Mr. Sukawaty has also been appointed to the board of Powerwave Technologies Inc., and as non-executive, Deputy Chairman of British Telecom's division.
